Headed Out This Summer? 10 Smart Ways to Vacation-Proof Your Home

The beach is my favorite place…even on vacation!

Here’s 10 Tips for Homeowners Going on Summer Vacation — Coming home is hard enough! Make sure you protect your biggest asset while you’re away!

1. Don’t Broadcast Your Trip Online - Avoid announcing your vacation on social media until you’re home. It’s one of the easiest ways thieves find empty houses.

2. Make Your Home Look Lived-In - Set lights on timers, leave blinds slightly open, and ask a neighbor to park in your driveway or take your trash bins in/out.

3. Lock Everything—Even the Weird Stuff - Double-check windows, sliders, side gates, garage doors, and even pet doors. Don’t forget to lock your electrical panel if it’s outside.

4. Pause Deliveries & Mail - Nothing says “nobody’s home” like a pile of packages. Pause mail or have someone collect it while you’re away.

5. Turn Off Water at the Main Valve - Protect your home from catastrophic leaks or floods by shutting off the water—especially if you’re gone for more than a few days.

6. Adjust Thermostat & Use Smart Tech - Raise the thermostat a few degrees (not off!) and use smart plugs or devices to simulate routines—lights, music, or blinds.

7. Use the Ice Cube Freezer Test - Place a cup of ice in your freezer. If it’s melted when you return, there may have been a power outage that spoiled your food.

8. Prep Plumbing & Appliances - Flush toilets, pour a little bleach in the bowls, and leave washer/dishwasher doors cracked open to prevent smells and mold.

9. Unplug Non-Essentials - Unplug TVs, kitchen appliances, and chargers to save energy and reduce the risk of electrical fires or surge damage.

10. Leave a Key with Someone You Trust - Give a friend or neighbor a key and let them know your plans. Bonus points if they water your plants or walk through once or twice.
